Page by Russ Waddell, Mrs. Jewell's favorite student Apoda is the scientific name and the common name
is
caecilians.

caecilians burrow under the ground

since they never see any light, they're blind

they can grow anywhere from one foot to four feet long

they lay eggs or have live young

they eat small bugs that live in the earth

their bodies are covered by small bony scales

Caecilians are rarely seen when not in captivity. There are no know species in Europe, North America, Australia, or Antarctica, which is no great surprise. Even if species did exist on these continents, many caecilians spend their entire lives burrowed under ground. Typhlonectes natas is a South American species commonly found in pet shops. They are usually called black eels or rubber eels and live in fishtanks.
