Students explore many phases of theatre arts through reading, viewing and participating actively in theatre experiences both at school and outside of the classroom. Activities include: the study of pantomime, improvement of vocal skills, movement for the stage, theatre terminology, theatre safety, interpretation of dramatic literature, study of musical theatre history, fundamentals of improvisation, oral interpretation, Readers Theatre, acting and stagecraft, basic costume design, straight and old age make-up, and play production management. Students build self-awareness, confidence and communication skills. This full-year course open too students in all grades satisfies the graduation requirement for a credit in fine and practical arts. Participation in co-curricular theatre productions is encouraged. Theatre Arts 2 Students build and expand upon the fundamentals explored in Theatre Arts 1. Study units and activities include auditioning techniques, theatre history, acting techniques for various period styles, dialect usage, fundamentals of directing, ensemble playing, oral interpretation, specialized characterization, script writing, theatre safety and play production. This full-year course satisfies the graduation requirement for a credit in fine and practical arts. Participation in the school one act play festival or Folger Shakespeare Theatre Secondary School Play Festival is required. Participation in co-curricular theatre productions is strongly encouraged.
Theatre Arts 3 & 4
Students study the elements of design and construction of sets for the stage; lighting design and execution; mechanics and techniques of sound system design; acquisition, construction and design of stage properties; design and manufacture of costumes; principles and application of make-up; stage management, theatre business management including promotion and ticket/advertising sales. Students analyze dramatic literature for an understanding of the design and production processes. Students fulfill many course requirements through participation in co-curricular theatre productions and/or supervised independent study. Students are encouraged and required to explore many areas of technical theatre, but are allowed to specialize in specific areas of particular interest for most productions. This course will fulfill the graduation requirements for a credit in fine or practical arts. Students are expected to attain and maintain a B certification in Theatre Safety by the end of the first year. Participation in co-curricular theatre productions and school activities requiring the use of the auditorium is required. Students who successfully pass all testing and certification requirements for a B or A Theatre Safety certification may, at the discretion of the theatre teacher and school administrator receive compensation as an employee of FCPS for services rendered in administering lighting and sound work for events held in the auditorium by selected organizations.
