TOM
Tom Buchanan came from a family of extreme wealth. At college, he "had been one of the most powerful ends that ever played football"(10) there. At college he became an acquaintance of Nick's. He married Daisy, Nick's second cousin. He is involved in an affair with Myrtle, Wilson's wife. As fate should have it, Tom's wife becomes involved in an affair with Gatsby. Tom is a very controlling individual evidenced by physically striking Myrtle. Tom also believes in the credibility of white supremacy a token of his high society mentality. Tom has a general compliance toward those of the lower class and has no qualms about sleeping with Wilson's wife. Tom gradually becomes suspicious of his wife's affair
and is outraged, demonstrating his hypocrisy.
