Because they were now able to commute into the city with the use of their cars, people moved to residences on the edges of towns called suburbs. This was where the new roadside culture was created. Retail districts, billboards advertising everything from vacuum cleaners to kitchen utensils and gas stations appeared instantaneously by the roadside. Autocamping, an inexpensive and safe way for families to travel the country, became so popular that it transformed into a national ad.
