NICK Nick Carraway is the narrator of the novel. His family has been in the Midwest for three generations and is supposedly descended from the Duke of Buccleuch. Like his father, he graduated from New Haven. He decides to pursue a career in the bond business, which leads him east to Long Island. As chance should have it, he buys a "weather beaten cardboard bungalow" (8) next to Gatsby's mansion. Nick becomes acquainted with Gatsby by attending his many parties, and is quickly swept up in Gatsby's love ambitions.
