The style of homes of the 1920s typically depended on the specific tastes and likings of the owner. Many Americans still preferred the old, aristocratic style of Europe. Some chose to imitate the Victorian style while others took a liking to the more traditional designs. (see picture on left for a house designed in the Victorian style.)
In addition to homes, summer cottages were also heavily invested in by much of the wealthy. One example of these fine cottages is The Breakers of Newport Rhode Island. Built for Cornelius Vanderbilt II in 1890-1892, The Breakers was a popular vacation home for the family even through the 1920s. This summer cottage, built by Richard Morris Hunt, reflects the style of an Italian palazzo.
