The Great Gatsby
1920's Hats and Hairstyles
The styles of the 1920s marked a turning point in American society. Women began to strive for equality, and with their defensive views toward the prejudices that had been facing them for centuries came ideas to make their appearances effective in making sure their voices were heard. The traditional long locks were done away with, and women cut their hair much shorter. The bob was introduced during World War I; the new hairstyle created a sensation. The media of the 1920s contained jokes, stories, cartoons, songs, skits, newspaper articles, and short movies, all about bobbed hair. Irene Castle and Louise Brooks were two of the women who popularized the new look.

Along with the bob came new hat styles. Quilted cloche with appliqued designs became the most popular new fashion in hats. Most hats had straw brims and a grosgrain band. The Bandeau was decorated with multicolored seed beads in an Argyle pattern. Like other changes in social fashions, the latest hairstyles and hatstyles made a statement.
