The Great Gatsby
1920's Fabrics
In the changing society of American communities, the clothing worn in the 1920s also changed. A variety of fabrics was used to keep up for the demand for the many different types of clothes. One-piece bathing suits were made of dark colored wool, something that would be considered unsuitable for water wear today. In the winter, women wore fur coats often of raccoon fur because it was the least expensive. Along with the heavy coat with celluloid buttons, ladies wore a matching shawl collar. Rayon became a popular man-made material for clothing during this time. Many prints on clothing consisted of a crazy quilt pattern. Satin, silk, chiffon, and cotton were also used frequently in the 1920s.
