Duke Ellington (1899-1974) was a composer, pianist, and big band leader during and following the Harlem Renaissance. He wrote over 2,000 songs during his lifetime as a jazz legend. He played at the legendary Cotton Club and came to personify Harlem jazz with the sounds of brass instruments and high, wailing clarinet, and his unique piano playing. Listen to some sound clips here.
