Josephine Baker

Josephine Baker was a performer in Paris and America during the Harlem Renaissance. Josephine was in the popface="Times New Roman, Times, serif"ular musical black comedy, Shuffle Along, which opened in May 1921.

Baker was born in the slums of St. Louis. When she was 13, Josephine left home and got a job as a waitress. She had a failed marriage that culminated in her joining a group of performers, the Jones Family Band. She performed at black vaudeville houses. Later, she would perform with the Folies-Bergeres, Ziegfield Follies, and the famous Le Negre Revue in Paris.

Josephine Baker was idolized by many and was one of the first truly successful black women entertainers. Her life was made into the movie The Josephine Baker Story, starring Lynn Whitfield.
