The Great Gatsby

San Francisco, California

San Francisco - This panoramic view (below) of San Francisco portrays a typical city in the Roaring Twenties. Industrialized and booming because of the assembly line and an increase in consumerism, the city has become a huge metropolis. In The Great Gatsby, Gatsby tells Nick that he is from the Midwest, but when asked where in the Midwest, his answer is San Francisco. This shows that Gatsby wishes to be known as coming from a metropolitan area rather than a rural town in North Dakota, which is where Gatsby was brought up. Nick's ignorance of this fact is probably known only to the reader because, later, he is not surprised to find that Gatsby's father is from Minnesota.
