The Great Gatsby

North Dakota/Minnesota
Both states being minor in the story of Gatsby, Nick, Daisy, and Tom, they had a significant importance to the roots of the main character, Gatsby. North Dakota is the place where James Gatz (Jay Gatsby after a name change at age of 17) was born and brought up. It is here that he obtains his roots that probably urge him to go to a city for a step up the social ladder.

Minnesota is the state in which Gatsby buys his father a house. Perhaps he was trying to keep his life in the Midwest in the shadows by buying the house. By purchasing the house, Gatsby probably succeeded in keeping his real past hidden because when Nick asks him of where in the Midwest Gatsby comes from he answers, "San Francisco."
