What We Do

Present discipline recommendations at the Superintendent's level to the School Board. Conduct expulsion hearings, exclusion hearings, and suspension appeal hearings regarding student discipline issues. (Suspension appeals are coordinated and conducted by cluster assistant hearing officers.) Conduct Superintendent-level hearings for employee grievances. Provide resource assistance to schools and offices; serve as a liaisons to schools, offices, and outside agencies in areas of safety, youth violence, and legal issues; and respond to questions from the public.

Discipline Functions

  • Coordinate and conduct student discipline hearings.
  • Maintain student expulsion records and statistics.
  • Consult with schools and offices about discipline process issues.
  • Process reentry requests for previously expelled or administratively placed students.
  • Conduct Superintendent-level hearings for employee grievances.

Liaison Functions

  • Serve as liaisons to the Fairfax County Police Department and work with SROs and school security staff members on safety issues and youth violence concerns.
  • Represent the Superintendent and the school system on collaborative task forces and committees.
  • Work with Fairfax County Juvenile and Domestic Relations Court staff members regarding students involved in probation or parole.
  • Provide schools, on an as-needed basis, with court charges of juveniles.
  • Serve as liaisons to the school system attorneys.

Resource Functions

  • Assist schools and offices with legal questions and regulatory issues.
  • Respond to citizen inquiries by phone or in writing.
  • Assess training needs and present in-service sessions.
