Overview

The Office of Student Activities and Athletic Programs directs and coordinates the student activities program, Virginia High School League athletic and academic competitions, and the athletic training program. It also provides financial oversight of centrally funded student activities, conducts training programs for athletic coaches and directors of student activities, provides guidance for principals and directors of student activities, and oversees the International Children's Festival program. As the school system's spokesperson for student activities, this office works closely with the Leadership Team, personnel from all school system departments, as well as parents, community members, the media, and outside agencies.

The Office of Student Activities and Athletic Programs also provides:

  • A centralized accountability that ensures continuity in programs offered in one of the nations most comprehensive school systems.
  • An internal liaison for student activities throughout the diverse FCPS system, which can focus decision making in the best interest of the program.
  • A knowledgeable representative, serving as a spokesperson with outside agencies, e.g., Virginia High School League, Fairfax County Department of Community and Recreation Services, Fairfax County Park Authority, and Fairfax County Athletic Council.
  • A proponent for student activities and athletic programs who has knowledge of current research and legislation and will support a well-balanced, safe program for FCPS students.
  • Oversight to ensure equal opportunities for student participation, while also assuring that participants have met eligibility requirements established by FCPS and VHSL.
  • Centralized oversight of 50 certified athletic trainers who provide comprehensive athletic health care to over 23,000 student athletes.
  • After school programs for middle schools
  • Automated External Defibrillator program

FCPS stresses the importance of a well-balanced activities and athletic program for boys and girls and realizes that many hours are given for study, practice, and total participation in any activity or athletic endeavor. Fairfax County encourages parents and community support of students for their achievements, because these activities are instrumental in developing great community interest and pride.

Everyone is invited to support students and schools by attending various events. You will find them to be most enjoyable and worthy of your time and effort.
