Research Opportunities
The FCPS Athletic Training Program
(ATP) has developed into a nationally recognized
organization for data collection related to adolescent
athletic injuries. Over the past several years, the ATP has
worked with a variety of research partners including Johns
Hopkins University, The University of Virginia, and The US
Lacrosse Foundation, National Rehabilitation Hospital, Union
Memorial Hospital, MedStar Health Research Institute Department of Defense and private
companies. We invite local physicians and researchers with
an interest in adolescent injury research to contact the
FCPS ATP Administrator for more information on potential
research opportunities.
FCPS ATP Statistics:
- Over 25,000 athletes participate each year.
- 27 sports featuring 50 teams.
- Two Virginia Board of Medicine licensed certified athletic trainers in each of the 25 high and secondary schools within FCPS providing daily comprehensive athletic healthcare to all student athletes.
- Computerized record keeping system tracks each problem, injury and treatment provided by an on-site
certified athletic trainers.
- Athletic participation rules support all injuries be brought to the attention of the certified athletic training staff.
- On-site research coordinator in place.
- Tracking of athlete demographics available over 4 years.
- Record keeping system may be modified to incorporate specific research project requirements.
- 10 years of cumulative data representing over 15 million athlete exposures.
