VHSL Pre-Participation Examination (PHYSICALS) Schedule 2008
All athletes MUST have a VHSL Pre-Participation Examination completed AFTER May 1, 2008 to be eligible to try out for sports during the 2008-09 school year. This physical can be completed by any licensed MD (Medical Doctor), DO (Doctor of Osteopathy), PA (Physician's Assistant) or NP (Nurse Practitioner). The FCPS Athletic Training Program provides the opportunity for students to have a sports specific physical screening completed at each school during late spring that will satisfy all requirements for the entire following school year.
BENEFITS of having the student athlete complete the physical at the school are many. The donation is usually less than the cost of having a physical completed at a medical center. ALL proceeds go directly to the school's athletics department, all physicians, ATCs, RNs, and other health care professionals donate their time to complete the physical. The screening is sports specific and each student athlete will receive a detailed review of the screening and comprehensive information packet at the conclusion of the screening process. A copy of the physical will be provided should your child need it for camps this summer.
PLEASE TAKE ADVANTAGE OF THIS OPPORTUNITY AND SUPPORT YOUR SCHOOL'S ATHLETIC TRAINING PROGRAM
ALL PHYSICALS FOR SPRING 2008 HAVE BEEN COMPLETED. HAYFIELD SECONDARY SCHOOL WILL HOST PPE's (PHYSICALS) ON AUGUST 4, 2008. SPACE IS LIMITED. REGISTRATION WILL BE OPEN FOR HAYFIELD's PPE's ON JULY 1.
SINCE YOU HAVE MISSED 24 OPPORTUNITIES TO RECEIVE A PPE AT AN FCPS SCHOOL THIS SPRING, PLEASE CONSULT YOUR FAMILY PHYSICIAN OR WALK IN CLINIC TO COMPLETE YOUR VHSL PPE PRIOR TO THE START OF YOUR SPORTS SEASON. IF YOU HAVE ANY QUESTIONS, PLEASE EMAIL THE CERTIFIED ATHLETIC TRAINER AT YOUR SCHOOL.

Athletic Training is an allied health care profession regulated by the Commonwealth of Virginia's Board of Medicine. A common misconception is that ATC's are the same as the "trainers" working at health clubs. While the "trainer" or "personal trainer" may be very knowledgeable in helping healthy people become stronger, faster or leaner, the education differences between the ATC and the "trainer" are drastically different.
The FCPS Athletic Training Program provides on-site
allied health care professionals to care for your child as
they participate in FCPS athletics, giving the
student-athlete the greatest opportunity to participate in
the safest manner possible.
All ATC's employed by FCPS hold certification by the NATA Board of Certification and a license with the Virginia Board of Medicine. The ATC's are responsible to provide not only emergency
care to injured athletes, but also provide injury
prevention, and rehabilitation and reconditioning of
athletic injuries. While the role of the ATC is not to
take the place of the family physician, the ATC can act as a
liaison between the athletes, coaches, parents and medical
community, as well as carry out the direction of a physician
regarding care and rehabilitation after an injury. Physician
Response forms and Medical
Information Release forms are available to
help encourage appropriate communication between the
treating physician and the ATC regarding a student-athletes
injury or condition. FCPS requires the ATC to be
informed of all injuries and conditions that impact the
participation status of a student athlete.
Getting your student started in FCPS athletics
Prior to participation, each
student athlete must have a valid Virginia High School
League (VHSL) Pre-participation
Physical Examination on
file with the school. An Emergency
Care Card (ECC) must also be completed and provided to the coach. In the event any
contact information changes, such as work phone number or
insurance information, please complete a new ECC and
return it to the schools athletics department. All athletes and parents must complete an Assumption of Risk for Skin Infections form that outlines preventative strategies that will reduce the transmission of infectious disease in the athletics environment.
Sports Medicine Information
The ATC is a tremendous resource
for information regarding sports medicine topics. Please
contact the ATC's at your child's school if you have any questions. You may also contact the Athletic Training Program Administrator at 571 423-1264.
