It is the combined effort of all involved, including the athletes, coaches, parents, administrators, physicians, VHSL staff, Certified Measurers and Regional Master Testers that allows the VHSL wrestling program to be one of the safest in the country.

REMEMBER: This tutorial (or a workshop) MUST be successfully completed PRIOR to any testing for the 2007-08 wrestling season.

Please allow enough time for the NEW CD-ROM to be sent to you upon successful completion. The NEW Excel file (version 907) must be used for the 2007-08 wrestling season.

The VHSL appreciates your dedication to the VHSL Weight Control Program and invites you to continue in your role as a Certified Measurer.

Procedures for testing:

1. Communicate with coaches and determine a method of communicating with athletes for briefing, scheduling of tests, and alternatives for retesting procedures. PLEASE attempt to set up a schedule (date and time) for the testing to be completed. Discuss how the testing procedures will take place, stations, assistance, etc. Remember that testing must be completed before practice while the athlete is at a resting heart rate.

2. Print off and provide hydration handouts for each athlete.

3. Provide information to athletes on tips to achieve normal hydration status for Usg assessment. Provide athlete's the handout with recommendations, including general nutrition and weight loss information

4. Print off Worksheet for data entry (worksheet is available on the CD-ROM)

5. Assess hydration level using urine specific gravity (Usg) via refractometer or Multistix (dipstix) Reagent Strips Usg must be 1.030 or less for testing to continue. NO further testing of body weight, or skinfold measurements should be taken if the athlete's Usg is 1.031 or above.

REMEMBER:  Do not continue with testing process if the athlete's Usg is 1.031 and above. They should return not less than one day later in a more hydrated state.

6. A Usg of 1.026 to 1.030 will result in a percentage of the athlete's actual weight being added automatically in the spreadsheet provided. All calculations of 7% minimum body fat (males) will be based on the modified baseline weight. The modified baseline weight projects the actual weight of the athlete in a normally hydrated state.
