WRESTLING WEIGHT CONTROL PROGRAM
FREQUENTLY ASKED QUESTIONS
Question #1:
My Coach has a question regarding the daily weigh-in chart and how strictly they are to follow it. He has a wrestler with a baseline weight of 152.9 and his weekly weight loss is 2.3lbs. He is now at week 4. If the daily weigh-ins over the past week are: Monday: 150, Tuesday: 144.1, Wednesday: 147 and Thursday: 146.6, would he be able to wrestle 145 on Saturday?
Answer:
The purpose of the daily weigh-in chart is for the coach to monitor bouncing and address such problems with large fluctuations accordingly. This should not be confused with the official weigh-in weights for matches.
Week to week weight loss is based on "official match weigh-in weights" and athletes should not exceed the allowable weight loss per week with buffer.
If the Coach Official Team Report indicates he is able to wrestle at 145 for this week, the fluctuation of 5 pounds of weight measured pre-practice daily is within normal limits. To determine eligibility for a match, the official match weigh-in weight (from W-1 forms) are used, not daily weight charts.
Question #2:
If on Wednesday January 9 a wrestler weighs in at 124.6, is it possible for them to weigh in on Wednesday January 16 (a week later) at 119.6? I know the new calender week starts on Sunday, but I was under the impression that the W-1 form from the previous weigh-in dictates the allowable weight loss? Can you clear this up for me? Thanks.
For clarification purposes, January 9 th falls in the week of Jan 7 – Jan 12 and January 16 th falls in the week of Jan 14 – Jan 19 regarding the VHSL WCP.
Assumption 1: January 9 th was the last time that week (Jan 7 – Jan 12) that the athlete weighed in at an official meet.
Assumption 2: Athlete’s lowest weight class allowed is 119 or below.
If an athlete weighs in for a meet at 124.6 on January 9 th, and it is stated on the W-1 form that 124.6 is the actual weigh-in weight, the athlete can loose a maximum amount of weight for the next week that is calculated by taking his “allowable weight loss per week” plus the buffer. The athlete would not be permitted to weigh in for any match that following week (Jan 14 – Jan 19) having lost more weight than allowed.
To show an example, let’s assume the athlete’s weight loss per week allowed is 2.0 pounds. (It may be higher, but most likely would be lower given the weight of 124) and the athlete was eligible to compete in the 119 class based on the Coach Official Team Report.
Last completed W-1 form for the week of Jan 7 – Jan 12 shows athlete weighing in at 124.6. The next week starts on the following Monday which would be January 14 th.
The athlete can loose 2 pounds which would allow him to weigh in the next week (Jan 14 – Jan 19) at a minimum of 122.6 but with the “Buffer”, the athlete is permitted to weigh in for a match no less than 122.0 for the entire week of Jan 14 – Jan 19. The athlete can weigh in at 122.0 as early as Monday, Jan 14 th but can not weigh in less than that for that entire week.
To expand on this progression of weight loss, if he weighs in at 122.4 for a match during the week of January 14 – 19, he could then weigh in at 120.4 (or as low as 119.9 using the buffer) during the following week (January 21 – Jan 26) and thus qualify for the 119 weight class IF the athlete is eligible for the growth pound (must have been tested prior to December 15 th) and eligible for the 119 during the week indicated on the Coach Official Team Report based on the appropriate number of weeks from the date of the test.
In the example provided, if the athlete weighed in for a match at 119.6 on January 16 th, but did not wrestle, this would be an unsportsmanlike violation and result in forfeiture of that match and the next scheduled match date for that wrestler. IF the athlete DID WRESTLE on January 16 th, it would be wrestling an ineligible and result in a forfeiture of that match and a fine.
This violation should not result in “wrestling an ineligible” if the coaches reviewed each other’s Coach Official Team Reports and previous W-1 forms.
