VHSL Wrestling Weight Control Program

The VHSL WCP will utilize the NWCA's Optimal Performance Calculator for calculating minimum weight class and weight loss schedules this 2011-12 season. Please review this PDF on how to navigate the NWCA's OPC.

The new program will require electronic W-1 forms to be completed for each match/tournament. Codes to access the NWCA online program will be sent to the schools. Coaches will need to upload the roster of wrestlers into the system, VHSL Certified Measurer's will upload the measurements into the system, and the Coach Official Team Report will be accessible online. Schedules of matches will also be required to be uploaded into the NWCA Online system.

Important Points for Coaches
The goal of this program is to allow for healthy gradual weight loss in those individuals who have body fat to lose and a desire to achieve a lower weight class. The Weight Loss Schedule for each wrestler can be viewed or printed out from the NWCA OPC. The wrestler's weight loss schedule is updated after EACH MATCH WEIGH IN.
W-1 forms must be completed online (Electronic W-1 forms) for each match within 24 hours of the match weigh-in.

Please be sure to have your wrestlers weigh in dressed consistently (including those in upper weight classes). There have been occasions when a wrestler has not worried about their weight for the particular weight class that week and wore sweats and a sweatshirt. Sweat pants and sweat shirt weighs more than nylon shorts, and that weight is recorded on the W-1 for the next weeks weigh in. This will influence what the wrestler can weigh the following week. The next week, the wrestler lost weight and weighed in wearing just shorts and was declared to have lost too much weight, and thus disqualified from that weeks matches. Please consider the wrestlers weight loss calendar when they weigh in each week . The wrestlers should weigh in consistently each match so that clothing weight is not a factor from week to week.

  • FIRST DATE OF TESTING IS OCTOBER 31, 2011. Only VHSL Certified Measurers and Regional Master Testers may perform measurements and the Coach-Official Team Report will be available online. Testing window is October 31st - November 19th, 2011. Athletes joining team after November 14 must be tested within one week of their first day of practice.
  • If the wrestler weighs in less than .5 pounds below the lowest "projected weight" for that day with the buffer (.5 - .9), they may step off the scale, drink up to 8 ounces of water and step back on the scale to become eligible for that weight class.
  • Wrestlers weighing in at a weight lower than permitted based on the allowable weight loss per week including buffer will be considered an unsportsmanlike violation and will be ejected from that date event and suspended from the next date event.
  • There will be no appeals in cases of VHSL Weight Control Program violations.
  • All wrestlers will receive a one-pound growth allowance on Jan. 1 when WCP testing is completed before Dec. 15 with the exception of wrestlers participating in fall season playoffs (88-4-1 (1)). All wrestlers will receive an additional one-pound growth allowance on Feb. 1 when WCP testing is completed on or before Jan. 15. These combined for a two-pound total allowance.
  • Wrestlers who are transferring from another state and have been tested and approved for a weight class must be retested using the VHSL WCP. The wrestler will not be permitted to compete in a weight class lower than the lowest weight class permitted by the VHSL WCP and the wrestler must comply with the weekly weight loss allowed by the VHSL WCP. The wrestler will be eligible to receive a one-pound growth allowance on Jan. 1 and an additional one-pound growth allowance on Feb 1 regardless of the date of the transfer.
  • The growth allowance cannot be used to allow a wrestler to reach a lower weight class than permitted without a growth allowance. The original weight class weight must be greater than or equal to the athlete’s minimum weight permitted.
  • W-1 forms must be completed ONLINE for all meets within 24 hours of the match weigh-in. The W-1 form will auto-calculate the athlete's eligibility to wrestle at that weight class on that date.
  • During the 2011-12 season, it is required that all wrestlers weigh in and record their weight before each practice. The monitoring of weight must be taken within the hour prior to the start of wrestling practice daily to maintain a consistent comparison from day to day.
  • Daily monitoring of a weight fluctuation of greater than 3 % should be scrutinized by the coach and may lead to a recalculation of the weight loss schedule. If a wrestler does gain more than 3% of his/her body weight, the coach should take the proper steps to council the athlete.
  • If an athlete does not agree with the results of his/her minimum weight class determination, they may appeal. Appeals must be requested within 2 days of the contested measurement. Appeals are now requested by the coach online.
  • Appeals must be completed within a few days from the previous test. Failure of the hydration test on the 2nd appeal will expire that appeal and no further testing will be permitted.
  • If body fat decreases below 7% (male) or 12% (female) at the appealled test, that test is void and no further testing is permited.
  • All wrestlers must weigh in at scratch weight the first time for a weight class.
