Out of Season Activities

Field Work
Some field teams will ask students to work on the game fields to ensure the best possible playing conditions.  Work is supervised by the coaching staff. Out-of-season work is not required, although it is appreciated, and it is not a condition for making a school team.

Fund-raising
Interscholastic athletic programs receive limited central funding.  Outside of coaching stipends, local transportation, regular event officials, and police security, all funding to run athletic programs comes from local gate revenues, booster donations, and fund-raisers.  Active participation in fund-raising is encouraged but not a prerequisite for participation.  All fund-raisers must be approved by the school and must follow all FCPS financial policies.

Out-of-Season Activities
There is no check-list or formula for making a high school team.  Attendance at a camp or clinic or participation in a league may better prepare a student for tryouts, but the involvement will not guarantee you a spot on a team.  Activity departments and coaches can provide suggested out-of-season activity recommendations but their advice should not be seen as a requirement or a commercial endorsement of a particular activity.  FCPS does not endorse or support the concept of “pipeline teams”.

Weight Rooms
Each high or secondary school has a supervised weight room.  Conditioning and supervised weight training are key ingredients to successful athletic programs.  Attendance out of season is not a prerequisite for making a team, but participation is strongly encouraged.  It makes sense that the harder you work, the better prepared you will be for an upcoming season.  Out-of-season weight training is also a great opportunity to share information and get to know coaches and future teammates.  Many weight rooms are open for student use over the summer.  Contact your local DSA for weight training room hours and conditions of use.
