Academics
FCPS statistics show that almost 40 percent of FCPS athletes earn at least a 3.5 grade point average GPA (4.0 scale). Grades are routinely monitored by the high school at midterm and at the end of each marking period. Parents may request an academic or athletic progress report at any time. The Virginia High School League requires a student to have passed at least five classes for credit the previous semester and to be currently enrolled in at least five classes for graduation credit to be eligible (there are other conditions for eligibility; please check the VHSL web site). Local schools may impose stricter academic requirements. The National Collegiate Athletic Association (NCAA) has additional academic requirements to become scholarship eligible at the collegiate level. Contact your director of student activities (DSA) for more information.
Athletic Participation and Eligibility
Eligibility rules are set by the Virginia High School League (VHSL) and are available on the League web site in the League Handbook. League rules may be supplemented by the Northern Region Council (NRC), the local district council, FCPS, or the school. For more information, go to www.vhsl.org and see the local director of student activities. It is the responsibility of the student and his or her parent to know the rules. Note: If a student or parent gives false information regarding eligibility, the student will be ineligible for VHSL activities for one year and may be subject to further discipline.
Communication
You should contact your local high school student activities office for program information, schedules, and tryout information. Schools typically distribute sports information to students through meetings held throughout the year at school; however, if you have a question about a sport activity, you should contact the coach, the director of student activities, or the school principal.
Organizational Structure
Interscholastic sports activities in Virginia are governed by national governing bodies, the National Federation of State High School Associations, the Virginia High School League, the Northern Region Council, and the local sport district. Locally, sports programs are also governed by the policies of Fairfax County Public Schools, the rules and regulations of the local school, and local team rules.
Participation Policy
Each high school has a participation policy that addresses many student issues, in particular, the use of drugs and tobacco products and the consumption of alcohol. Participation policies are in addition to the FCPS Student Responsibilities and Rights document. Student involvement in use of drugs, alcohol, or other risky behaviors will carry a stiff penalty, and it is the student’s and parent’s responsibility to know the rules. Contact your school’s activity office for a copy of the policy and for more information.
Sportsmanship
Good sportsmanship and citizenship are cornerstones of our society. Coaches, athletes, parents, officials, and spectators are expected to display good sportsmanship at all times. For more information, go to www.vhsl.org.
