Athletic Boosters
Membership in the local athletic booster organization is strongly encouraged. Whether donating time, offering services, or raising funds, booster organizations are important auxiliary groups that are critical to the healthy operation of an athletic program. Membership information can be obtained by calling your local school DSA.
Assistant Director of Student Activities (ADSA)
The assistant director of student activities works in a teaching position and also has administrative responsibilities in support of the athletic and activities programs.
Certified Athletic Trainer (ATC)
The Athletic Training Program was established in FCPS in 1983. The program was designed to provide quality sports injury care in each of the high schools. In 1988, as the athletics program grew in FCPS, the athletic health care needs responded by featuring two certified athletic trainer (ATC) positions in each high school. All 50 certified athletic trainers in FCPS are committed to providing quality care for all of athletes. Please contact your school ATC if you child is under care of a medical physician. In the event of an injury and a student is seen by a doctor, written authorization is required from the attending physician before the student can be considered eligible to return to play. The school ATC may require additional information from the attending physician before the student will be allowed to practice or play.
Director of Student Activities (DSA)
The DSA is a full-time Fairfax County Public Schools administrative position responsible for the athletic program and student activities. Additionally DSA’s have instructional responsibilities, building managerial responsibilities, and other duties assigned by the school principal. They have graduate degrees, Virginia secondary school principal certification, and other advanced training.

The National Federation of State High School Associations (NFHS) (www.nfhs.org)
The NFHS is a national association located in Indianapolis. Among other duties, the association writes the rule books for high school sports. The mission of the NFHS is to serve its members and its related professional groups by providing leadership and national coordination for the administration of interscholastic activities that will enhance the educational experiences of high school students and reduce risks of their participation. The NFHS will promote participation and sportsmanship to develop good citizens through interscholastic activities that provide equitable opportunities, positive recognition, and learning experiences to students while maximizing the achievement of educational goals.
NCAA (www.ncaa.org)
The National Collegiate Athletic Association (NCAA) is a voluntary association of about 1,200 colleges and universities, athletic conferences, and sports organizations devoted to the sound administration of intercollegiate athletics. Through the NCAA, member schools and conferences consider any athletics problem that has become national in character. Volunteer representatives from these schools and conferences establish rules that govern the association and programs designed to further its purposes and goals.

If you intend to participate in Division I or Division II athletics as a freshman in college, you must be registered with and be certified as eligible by the NCAA Initial-Eligibility Clearinghouse. Refer to “Academic Eligibility” section to determine the initial-eligibility standards that apply to you. Please note that initial-eligibility certification pertains only to whether you meet the NCAA requirements for participation as a freshman in Division I or Division II athletics and has no bearing on your admission to a particular Division I or Division II institution.
The Virginia High School League, Inc. (www.vhsl.org)
The VHSL is the governing body of interscholastic activities for 305 public high and secondary schools in Virginia. The league administrative offices are located in Charlottesville. For athletic competition, the League groups schools according to size and location. All FCPS schools are AAA (the largest classification). FCPS competes in the northern region. There are four competitive districts in the Northern Region. The Leagues also sponsors many nonathletic activities.
