In May 2006, the Fairfax County School Board approved $2.5 million in funding for 22 TLD grants, which were awarded to 24 schools for fiscal year 2007. The three-year grant program extends some teachers’ contracts so that they work additional days during the year, which enables those teachers to focus on general and specific strategies that affect student achievement. It also provides for additional compensation for the additional teacher days and includes evaluations taking place throughout the three-year program. In spring 2007, the School Board also approved funding for the TLD grant program for fiscal year 2008. “Education is going through a period of change,” said Superintendent Jack D. Dale. “As the emphasis on students turns to meeting their individual needs and making the most of their abilities, we are finding that teachers are best able to help students by working in teams or groups. This initiative will give teachers the time and opportunity to forge teams that use innovation and creativity, along with research and collaboration, to help students succeed.” View a sample of the results:
Beliefs, Vision, and Mission The School Board has launched a new strategic governance initiative which includes new beliefs, vision, and mission statements and student achievement goals to provide a more concentrated focus on student achievement and to establish clearer accountability. At the top of the list of student achievement goals are continued rigorous academics that exceed the requirements of the No Child Left Behind Act (NCLB) and continue the FCPS tradition of offering an exceptional education to all students. The goals also emphasize communication in at least two languages for all students and a renewed emphasis on individual character and ethical judgment.
