Preschool: Getting Started

Accessing special education preschool services requires that a child be found eligible for those services. The process begins when a parent suspects that a child may not be developing appropriately because they have not started talking or walking or crawling or completed other major developmental milestones. Parents may refer their child for a free developmental screening starting when the child is 20 months of age and will turn 2 by September 30th by contacting Child Find. If the screening reveals any delays in the areas screened (speech/language, motor, self- help/adaptive and social-emotional), the child is referred to the Local Screening Committee, which reviews the results of the screening and other information and determines whether a battery of evaluations are needed to determine eligibility for special education services. For more information, please look at information under Child Find.
