Child Find: Other Services

Community Outreach Services of Preschool Child Find

Preschool Child Find not only provides services to families who have identified specific concerns about their children, but also serves a proactive role in the community. To that end, Preschool Child Find performs the following community services:

  • Increasing community awareness of early identification of handicapping conditions and the importance of early intervention
  • Informing the public of special education services
  • Ensuring that all information is provided in a variety of native languages or modes of communication.

Liaisons to Local Preschools and Day Care Centers

One of the most important functions that Preschool Child Find staff provide is as a resource to local preschools in the Fairfax County community. Preschool Child Find staff make a concerted effort to identify all preschools, day care centers, and Family and Early Childhood Education Programs (FECEP) in the area. Once identified, the preschool is assigned a Preschool Child Find staff member who may provide any of the following services:

  • Conducting staff observations of children about whom both the staff and parents have concerns Note: Preschool Child Find does not conduct observations of children without written parental consent.
  • Providing information about Preschool Child Find and related services.
  • Providing inservice presentations to preschool staff and workshops to preschool parents.

Preschool Social Work Services

Social Workers assigned to the preschool program are available to provide the following services:

  • Support of teachers
  • Interagency collaboration
    • Infant and Toddler Connection
    • Child Protective Services
    • Department of Family Services
    • Private providers and agencies
  • Training and education
    • In-service for new teachers
    • Monthly preschool parenting series
    • Specific information on Child Find
  • Direct intervention with families
    • Short term parenting intervention and crises management
    • Referrals to mental health/behavioral therapists
