Definitions
Cognitive
Skills - skills relating to concept development, thinking, reasoning, planning, and
problem solving.
Fine
Motor Skills - small muscle actions, such as those involved in eye-hand coordination, reaching,
grasping, and object manipulation.
Gross
Motor Skills - large muscle actions such as walking, running, jumping, and hopping.
Communication
Skills - skills relating to (1) understanding language, such as the ability to answer
questions and/or follow simple directions,
and (2) communicating expressively through
words, gestures, symbols, or other body language,
and (3) pragmatic language skills, such as
initiating and/or maintaining conversational
turn-taking.
Local
Screening Committee - a committee comprised of a variety of professionals which may include an early
childhood special educator, a speech/language
clinician, a social worker, a psychologist,
and a Principal's Designee to represent the
school administration. A Local Screening Committee
is located at each screening site and hears
the report presented by the screener and/or
information presented by the parent and makes
recommendations as to the appropriate next
step for the child.
Self-Help
Skills - skills relating to attaining more personal independence, including eating,
dressing, and toileting.
Social/Emotional
Skills - skills relating to peer and adult relationships, self-concept, and play skills.
Speech
Skills- include the areas of articulation (how child uses oral and facial muscles to
pronounce different sounds), fluency (rate
and flow of speech), and voice quality.
