Please register for any of the following workshops, except where noted otherwise, by calling the Parent Resource Center at 703-204-3941 or emailing us at prc@fcps.edu. Include your telephone number with your email and enter the word registration in the subject line. Accommodations and interpreters are available for all workshops. Please let us know two weeks in advance if you need any of these services.

To get the latest information about workshops, new books and materials, and events at the Parent Resource Center via email, sign on to Keep in Touch. This web-based communication tool is an option offered by Fairfax County Public Schools to provide parents with information about a variety of topics on a timely basis. To sign on, go to the homepage of Fairfax County Public Schools at http://www.fcps.edu. Click on Keep in Touch in the left-hand side green navigation box. Fill in the required information and mark Special Education Services.

Note: When schools are closed, or if we have a late opening or early closing due to inclement weather, our workshops are cancelled and will be rescheduled at a later date. Snow dates have been noted for selected workshops.

This month we will use Dr. Robert Brooks’ DVD, “Look What You’ve Done!” to support a discussion on practical strategies to help reinforce self-esteem and motivation in children with learning disabilities and ADHD.

What Am I Going to Do After High School?

Exploring Post-secondary Education Options:
A seminar for students with IEPs and their parents

When: May 13, 2008
Time: 7:00 – 8:30 pm

Do you know what your child will do after high school? Do they know what their options are? This presentation will help you and your child understand how to figure out the best options for their transition from high school. This seminar will help you explore post-secondary education options with your child and learn how to address issues such as accessing support services, documentation, and how to talk about disabilities.

You and your child can come and learn about a variety of education options and how to determine what’s best for them after high school including:

• 4-year and 2-year Colleges
• Technical Schools
• Apprenticeship Programs
• Military

Celebrate Communication 2008

What better way to enjoy Better Hearing and Speech Month than to attend NVRC's Celebrate Communication 2008?

When: May 10, 2008, from 10 a.m. - 3 p.m.
Where: George Mason University, Center for the Arts on Saturday


This annual event is jam-packed with information, support and the latest in assistive technology. The Northern Virginia Resource Center for Deaf and hard of Hearing Persons (NVRC) and the Helen A. Kellar Institute for Human disAbilities partner to provide a day of free activities and exhibits for the Deaf and Hard of Hearing community. In addition to information about non-profit groups and government agencies, there will be exhibits about relay services, innovative equipment, and cochlear implant technology. There will also be entertainment, artists and crafters, and activities for children.

Arlington County Parks & Rec, Therapeutic Recreation Department presents
Family Fun Night is a new drop-in program for families of children and teens on the autism spectrum.  On the first Friday of every month they plan new leisure activities for families to participate in together.  This is a simple, low-key opportunity for the community to come together and have fun playing and socializing.  Try new games, crafts, and sports--activities will vary.
