ABOUT THE PARENT RESOURCE CENTER

The Parent Resource Center of the Fairfax County Public Schools promotes parent awareness of the services provided by the Fairfax County Public Schools for children with special needs and their families. The Center encourages parent participation in the educational decision-making process and provides seminars, training programs, and information to foster the parent/professional partnership. The Center also serves as a resource for educators and the community.

Under the direction of the educational specialist of the Parent Resource Center,
the Center staff provides:

 INFORMATION ON:

  • FCPS special education and related services and community resources
  • a referral network to meet individual needs (educational, transitional, vocational, recreational, health, etc.)
  • rules, regulations, and procedures that affect families of children with special needs
  • parent support groups and local/national organizations
  • specific disabilities and other topics related to individuals with disabilities

SKILLS THROUGH:

  • workshops and resources covering a variety of topics, such as the role of parents in the special education process, specific disabilities, the IEP, and communication skills
  • information and materials for parents so that they may contribute actively to the planning of appropriate educational experiences for their children
  • strategies to enable parents, professionals, and other agencies to work together to increase opportunities for families of children with special needs
 

SUPPORT BY:

  • consultation that provides information on educational issues and community services so that parents
  • can make informed decisions concerning their child's development and education
  • coordination and assistance to parent support groups and parent to parent networks
  • provision of a resource library containing books, periodicals, and publications on subjects specific to children with special needs
  • maintenance of a liaison relationship with community agencies and associations that serve individuals with disabilities
  • availability of an information packet, a parent handbook, a newsletter, and program profiles
  • technical assistance to FCPS staff in integration and disability awareness efforts
