  • On July 20-23, 2009, Cognitive Reading Strategies Level 1 training will be offered for teachers. This training is for special education teachers working with students in grades 1-3 who are significantly below grade level in reading. For full certification, this course requires that participants additionally attend four follow up sessions in the fall of 2009. The course will be offered at Gatehouse Administrative Center and teachers can register through MyPLT.
  • On June 22-25, 2009, Cognitive Reading Strategies Level 2 training will be offered for teachers. This training is for special education teachers working with students in grades 3-6 who are significantly below grade level in reading. For full certification, this course requires that participants additionally attend four follow up sessions in the fall of 2009. The course will be offered at Gatehouse Administrative Center and teachers can register through MyPLT.
  • On July 27-28, 2009, Wilson Reading training will be offered for teachers. This training is for special education teachers working with students in grades 3-12 who demonstrate significant difficulty in decoding and spelling. For full certification, this course requires that participants attend both days of the training. The course will be offered at Gatehouse Administrative Center and teachers can register through MyPLT.
  • On August 17, 2009, Reading Mastery training will be offered for teachers. Training in this comprehensive reading program is for special education teachers working with students in grades 1-6 who are significantly below grade level in reading. This half day training will be offered at Gatehouse Administrative Center and teachers can register through MyPLT.
  • On August 17, 2009, Connecting Math training will be offered for teachers. This supplemental math program targets students in grades 1-6 who are working significantly below grade level in math. This half day training will be offered at Gatehouse Administrative Center and teachers can register through MyPLT.
  • On August 18, 2009, training will be offered in Read Naturally, a supplemental program designed to increase reading fluency. This training is open to both elementary and secondary special education teachers. This training will be offered at Gatehouse Administrative Center and teachers can register through MyPLT.
  • The Assistive Technology Services (ATS) Technology Outreach Program Support (TOPS) program identifies staff members throughout the county who are interested in learning more about assistive technology use for students in special education and in sharing that knowledge with their colleagues. This program currently has close to 300 members and many of them met during the year to focus on developing assistive technology resources that can be shared with staff through the ATS website. The TOPS group will hold their final meeting of the year on June 10th from 1:00-3:00 in the auditorium at the Fairfax County Government Center. During this meeting, members will highlight activities and accomplishments from the school year.

  • Mollie Kropp, Assistive Technology Resource Teacher, and Kristie Ketchum, Itinerant Teacher of Deaf/Hard of Hearing students, will present at the Conference of American Instructors of the Deaf at Gallaudet University on June 24. They will show how to create interactive electronic books and related activities. These e-books incorporate scanned images; embedded video with American Sign Language, Cued English, and spoken English; and a variety of hyperlinks to help expand linguistic concepts in ASL and English. Assessment activities are included for linguistically and academically diverse students in elementary and secondary settings.
  • FCPS has partnered this spring with Chesterbrook Residences in McLean to provide students attending Davis Center with a worksite and apartment space to practice life skills. This is the first time that we have actually had a donated apartment space provided to us to practice these skills. The experiment has gone very well. Chesterbrook is welcoming us back with open arms for the 2009/10 school year.
