Assistive Technology Services

Assistive Technology Services is pleased to announce a new training series:
AAC Integration Series

AAC, or augmentative and alternative communication, devices are used by a number of students in Fairfax County Public Schools.  Learning to program a device is not the hard part; learning to integrate the device and help our students use them is more of a challenge.  This series was created to assist with this challenge.

The series is made up of 5 different topics.  Each topic will be offered 3 times in a month, twice in the afternoon and once in the evening.  Dates and times will be added to the list below as the event approaches.

The first topic, First Steps, was offered in October.  The second topic, Integrating AAC into Your Day, was offered in December.  The third topic, Visuals to Foster Communication, was offered in January.

The fourth topic in the series is:
Templates and Other Communication Resources
Discover how to use Boardmaker templates to create and adapt paper overlays for a variety of communication devices being used in Fairfax County Public Schools.  This session will help those who are new to Boardmaker learn how to add picture symbols and import digital images. Please bring a digital photo on a CD or flashdrive. Attendees will also gain knowledge of available downloads for Boardmaker as well as other alternative and augmentative communication resources.

Please note:  This training will not show how to make pages for use on high-end communication devices such as those made by DynaVox or Prentke Romich.  Teachers and parents of students who use a high-end communication device should contact their ATS case manager regarding device trainings.
