Creating a Presentation with PowerPoint

The Power Point Views

Slide View

  • Use this to modify individual slides
  • Displays one slide at a time
  • Use the scroll bar or previous/next buttons to move between slides

Outline View

  • Use this view to develop the slide show content
  • Displays a list of slide titles and their content in outline format
  • Look at the special toolbar available to help you enter and organize your outline

Slide Sorter View

  • Use to organize the order of your slides, add actions between
  • Slides, and add other effects to you slide show
  • Displays a thumbnail of each slide in the same order they will appear in your presentation

Notes Page View

  • Use this view to add additional notes that only the presenter will use.
  • Displays a reduced view of a single slide with a text box to type notes that will help you give your presentation

Slide Show View

  • Use this view to give your presentation
  • Displays your slides one at a time
  • Advances from slide to slide by a click
  • Press Esc at any time to exit the slide show


Starting a Slide Show from Scratch

1. Open Power Point

2. Choose from the following

  • Auto Content Wizard - gets you started by providing ideas and an organization for your presentation. It usually contains 5-10 slides that follow an organized progression of ideas.
  • Design Template - allows you to select from a list of already created designs to accent your presentation
  • Blank Presentation- gets you started without organizational or design assistance

Choosing an Auto Layout

This is displayed each time you add a new slide. It allows you to choose a slide layout with placeholders for text, bulleted lists, tables, charts, clip art etc.

Entering Information in Slide View using placeholders

  • For text placeholders, click the placeholder and type the necessary text.
  • For other objects, double click the placeholder and work with whatever accessory PowerPoint starts.

Developing an Outline

1. Entering Text

  • In outline view, click to position the insertion point where you want the text to appear, then type the text pressing Enter after each line.

2. Adding a slide in Outline View

  • Click at the end of the previous slide text, then click the New Slide button on the Standard toolbar, or press Ctrl+Enter to insert a slide using the existing slide layout.

Rearranging Slides

1. In Outline View

  • Click the slide icon of the slide you want to move
  • Click the move up button or the move down button
  • Repeat until the slide is where you want it

2. In Slide Sorter View

  • Click and hold the slide you want to move and then drag it to the new location

Printing a Presentation

You have the option of printing all the elements of your presentation including the actual slides, the notes, the outline, or your entire presentation on one page as a set of thumbnails.

  • Click the File menu and then click print
  • Click on the "Print What" drop down arrow
  • Select what you want to print from the list
  • Change the settings in the Print dialog box as necessary
  • Click OK
