Communicating
Expectations
Behavior:
Using symbols to show your expectations visually
helps to clarify to students what is expected
of them, as well as what the next step is
going to be. The following example came from
Ellie Stack at ITS:
| "I
had a student whose behavior changed
drastically once I started using the
first board on this Boardmaker layout.
With the use of this board, he knew what
I expected of him as he walked through
the hall. Even though I had been telling
him the same thing for months, he needed
to see it before he understood." |
Educationally: Students will
learn symbols quickly if YOU use them
throughout the day.
Communication: When
students use their voices to communicate,
you constantly talk to them to teach them
language. The same is true for students that
use symbols on boards or devices to communicate.
They need you to communicate with them verbally,
as well as with symbols. This is how they
will expand their vocabulary. |

Directions:
Choose one of the two versions of each worksheet
to download. One type is the Boardmaker file
and you must have the program in order to
use it. These files have been compressed
and you must have the latest version of StuffIt
Expander in order to "unstuff" them.
If you need the program, go to the Aladdin
Systems web site for information. The
other file is the pdf version which you can
use without Boardmaker. You must, however,
have Adobe Acrobat Reader to open it up.
If you don't have that program, go to the Adobe web
site for instructions.

Writing
Activities
These
activities can be used with students to write
about their day and reflect on what they
did at work.
The morning
sheet comes in three formats:
- Writing -
for students who can produce / or copy
words
- Regular -
Boardmaker symbols are available for students
to circle to indicate their answers
- Fewer
choices -
Students are only given 3 choices for
day and month
Student
reflection sheets can be used
after any activity and they allow the students
to write about what they did. Great for
the VAAP!

Weather
by
Becky Cousins
Here
is a great idea for incorporating weather
lessons into a daily classroom routine. Each
morning have the students look through the
current Washington Post to find the Metro
section. They then look at the weather report
on the back which uses very clear symbols
to depict cloudy, raining, snowing etc. This
is a great way to make talking about the
weather as a functional life skill.
