Office Technology & Procedures
What is the Office Technology & Procedures program?
Office
Technology & Procedures (OTP) is an office skills program that operates in conjunction with
FCPS administrative offices. Students are scheduled
for two periods of instruction and one period of
travel per day, and are transported from their
schools by Fairfax County Public School buses.
OTP
is a two-credit course in which students generally
enroll for a minimum of two years. Following
a sufficient and appropriate amount of classroom
instruction, OTP students participate in community
work sites, performing office tasks.
Who
enrolls in OTP?
High
school students with disabilities who demonstrate
interest in future employment in an office environment
are good candidates for OTP. A previous career
assessment may have identified skills and interests
in office-related work. Students are usually juniors
or seniors, and should be at least fifteen years
of age.
What
will students learn in OTP?
OTP curriculum provides students with opportunities to develop
skills and achieve competencies in the areas of computer applications,
communication skills, office
procedures and career preparation. Some of the activities and assignments students
participate in are:
- Word
processing, data entry, spreadsheet creation,
and presentation design
- Materials
ordering, shipping and receiving, mail sort
and delivery
- Filing
and photocopying
- Telephone
and interview techniques
- Resume
writing, job-seeking, and job-keeping strategies
- Internet
usage
- Placement
in a community work site
What
supports are available in OTP?
OTP
provides individual and small-group instruction
in accordance with students' IEP goals and objectives.
When needed, job coaches are assigned to students
to help facilitate their transition from the classroom
to the business site. OTP staff and Employment
and Transition representatives monitor students'
progress and communicate regularly with job coaches
and employers.
