Job Coach Services

What are Job Coach Services?
The job coach program is designed to support students' success as independent workers. Job coaches assist students who have the potential for independent employment, but need specialized, short-term, on-the-job, support and training to succeed. The Job Coach Model provides:

  • One to one training at the work site
  • Short-term training leading to worker independence
  • Long-term follow-up by Employment and Transition representatives

Who do job coaches support?
The job coach provides training at the work site to FCPS students with disabilities between the ages of 16 and 22 years old who have the potential for independent employment.

Job coaches assist students integrate specific work skills learned in the classroom setting to a real work environment. Among the many skill areas addressed by job coaches are:

  • Meeting employer expectations
  • Developing and enhancing self-advocacy skills
  • Developing and integrating specific skills at the job site, such as time management, organizational skills, and social skills


What supports do job coaches provide?

Job coaches provide one to one training, support, and supervision for the instructional phase of the job. The role of the job coach is to:

  • Report to work with the student on the first day
  • Establish a daily work routine and schedule
  • Provide systematic training of specific job duties
  • Model appropriate work-related behaviors
  • Assist the students in social integration and self-advocacy skills
  • Increase student's work speed
  • Train until worker independence on the job is achieved
  • Gradually decrease job coach support

Who to contact?
Referrals can be made through the student's Employment and Transition representative, the Department Chair at the student's high school, or directly to the Job Coach Program coordinators.
