Newcomers:
Enroll Early!
If you know someone
who has school-age children and needs help in English, please
advise the family to call Student Registration. Student Registration
has skilled multilingual registrars to assist them through
the registration process in their home language. The best
time for school enrollment is as soon as possible after arrival
in Fairfax County. Registrations are processed all year long,
even on the last day of school and through the summer months!
Registration in August and September may require protracted
waiting time due to the great demand for enrollments at that
time. Call 703-876-5219 or 703-876-5230 for registration
appointments.
Notice to Non-Parents
Seeking to Enroll Children
If you or someone you know is taking care of children whose parents are not living
in Fairfax County, the guardians should contact Student Registration immediately
to request school enrollment. If the parents initially enrolled the students
and have now left Fairfax County, a change in enrollment status may be necessary.
Virginia law and FCPS school board policy and regulation set criteria regarding
the enrollment of children by non-parents. Please be aware that having legal
custody is only one of the requirements. Before going
to court, call Student Registration at 703-876-5231 for information on children
being enrolled by a guardian.
Moving?
Parents must
notify the school when the home address is going to change.
If parents move out of Fairfax County, the child is no
longer eligible and will be withdrawn from Fairfax County
Public Schools. Be careful! Make sure you check addresses
close to adjacent jurisdictions to be sure that they
fall in Fairfax County. If you have a question regarding
your address, call the Boundaries Office at 246-1111
or go online to http://www.fcps.k12.va.us/about/boundary.htm to verify the school of attendance that corresponds to your address.
Travel Plans?
Parents who
move out of Fairfax County and leave their children under
the care of another adult need to inform the school principal
of their intentions in advance. Physical presence of
the parent in the same residence as the child is required
for tuition-free enrollment in FCPS. If you are planning
for an indefinite absence please contact Student Registration
at 703/876-5231 to request a change to tuition-paying
status so that your children may continue attending Fairfax
County Public Schools.
Homeless?
Fairfax County Public Schools has implemented procedures for the identification
and enrollment in school of homeless students. Parents and guardians of
families experiencing homelessness may call Student Registration at 703-876-5240
or the neighborhood school for enrollment assistance. The Fairfax County
Public Schools Homeless Liaison, Kathi Sheffel, can be reached at 571-423-4332.
