Standards of Learning (SOL) Assessments

The No Child Left Behind (NCLB) Act requires that all students, including those with disabilities, be assessed on statewide accountability measures for the purpose of measuring Adequate Yearly Progress (AYP).

In Virginia, students with disabilities have several options for participating in the regular state accountability assessments.
Students with disabilities may participate in the Standards of Learning (SOL) assessments in the same manner that non-disabled students participate, or they may participate in the SOL assessments with standard or non-standard accommodations.

Students with disabilities may participate in an alternative measure of grade-level content.

In grades 3—8 may participate in the Virginia Grade Level Alternative (VGLA) Program.
In grades 9—12 may participate in the Virginia Substitute Evaluation Program (VSEP) as a means of verifying high school credits toward graduation.
