Bullying Prevention Training Program

In the last half of the 2002-2003 school year, a bullying prevention training program began to be presented. The purpose of the training is to supplement the existing guidance curriculum and create pilot staff training development in the area of bullying prevention. The goal is to establish a safe and positive school environment, fostered by involved adults who act as authorities and serve as role models to eliminate bullying and other forms of harassment.

Conflict Resolution and Mediation Services Program

Conflict resolution trainings are offered periodically throughout the year and as an academy class in the summer; mediation services and in-service trainings are also offered to FCPS staff. Currently, FCPS has about 100 peer mediation programs at various stages of development. In addition, many elementary schools teach conflict resolution skills as part of their guidance curriculum. Gang Prevention Program

In the last half of the 2002-2003 school year gang prevention training began to be presented. The training is intended primarily for staff and parents, but it has been used as a presentation for student groups as well. Additionally, some of the material has been used during conflict mediation training. The training addresses the following questions: what are they, how do we identify them, gangs and the law, why join a gang, and what are the general types of behaviors? In addition, the training identifies gangs in Fairfax County and provides information on what parents, school staff, and community members can do.

Second Step

This is a violence prevention program that is being implemented in all FCPS elementary schools. It aims to reduce impulsive, high-risk, and aggressive behaviors and to increase children's social-emotional competence and other protective factors. The program is divided into three skill-building units: empathy, impulse control and problem solving, and anger management.
