Spotlight on Mentoring

Congratulations, Robyn Leersnyder!
The May 2008 Mentor of the Month is a Parent Volunteer from Beech Tree ES.

Robyn Leersnyder with mentees Josiah, Gabriel and Tyler

Robyn Leersnyder has faithfully mentored students for eight years at Beech Tree Elementary School. At one time she was mentoring and tutoring nine students! Robyn has been co-sponsoring the PALS (Friends) program for seven years. She has recruited many community members, helped out with the mentors’ orientation, and the PALS celebration in June. Robyn always comes to school with a welcoming smile and a willingness to work with all the students.

Mrs. Leersnyder enjoys reading in the library with her students or bringing in educational games from home. Since she has been working with a group of three boys for four years, she has see great improvement in their self-esteem. They are not embarrassed to try new words and their concentration has increased over time. When asked about the mentoring experience, Robyn said “The children’s faces light up when they see me each week. They know I am there for them. I truly believe in the importance of giving your time and effort to a child. Through lots of patience, you will see so much improvement.”

One student mentioned, “Mrs. Leersnyder finds a way to make reading fun. I especially loved the story she read called, “A Snowman Named Bob.

Nominated by Chris Stunkard, Counselor and Mentor Program Coordinator at Beech Tree ES.
