YOUR LOCAL ADVISORY COMMITTEE
THE ADVISORY COMMITTEE FOR STUDENTS WITH DISABILITIES
SERVES YOU AND YOUR COMMUNITY

The Fairfax County Advisory Committee for Students with Disabilities (ACSD) advises the Fairfax County School Board about special education issues and ways in which they can make special education services as effective as possible. The ACSD is the Local Advisory Committee (LAC) that the state of Virginia requires for each school division. The committee is a collaborative effort among school division personnel, parents, and other community representatives.

Members are appointed by the Fairfax County School Board to serve two-year terms. Fairfax County citizens serve on the ACSD, representing, among others, each member of the School Board, the eight clusters, and a variety of citizen groups, as mandated by School Board regulation. The ACSD accomplishes its purpose by:

  • assisting local school division personnel in developing long range plans for special education services;
  • advising school division personnel, the School Board, and the community about issues related to special education; and
  • participating in the development of priorities and strategies to meet identified needs of students with disabilities.

As a Local Advisory Committee, the ACSD must designate one meeting annually to review the school division's Special Education Annual Plan, which is submitted to the State Department of Education with the application for federal funds. The ACSD also provides an annual report to the School Board that describes the year's activities and identified areas of need.

This year, much of the committee's work will focus on studying two identified areas and how they affect the education of students with disabilities: inclusion of students with disabilities in the general education classroom and instruction issues affecting students with disabilities.

The ACSD formed subcommittees related to these topics that will continue to work on them throughout this school year.

Citizens are welcome to contact members of the ACSD, provide written comment to the ACSD, or give public comment at the meetings during the time designated. Contact information follows.

The committee meets 7:30 p.m. on the second Wednesday of each month except August and September at the Dunn Loring Administrative Center, 2334 Gallows Road, Dunn Loring, Virginia (unless otherwise noted). Public comments are limited to three minutes, and the committee appreciates written copies of public comments that include contact information. Anyone needing accommodations for a disability in order to attend or participate in this Fairfax County Public Schools activity should call (703) 204-3941. Calls should be made seven days prior to the activity so that appropriate arrangements can be made.

The purpose of the ACSD is to promote the assurance of free, appropriate public education for students with disabilities. Its functions are to advise the FCPS and its School Board of the unmet needs in the education of children with disabilities and assist in developing plans to meet those needs. The ACSD is advisory and does not make policy, procedures, or regulations for students in Fairfax County.
