South County Secondary School incorporates instructional
technology in creative and effective ways to further the academic mission
of the school. Technology is used to facilitate student learning and
to develop skills critical to information and technical fluency in
the 21st Century. Staff members use the extensive technology tools
at South County to engage and challenge students, as well as to bring
efficiency to the management and assessment of learning.
The school operates a building-wide local area network (LAN)
that allows students to access a high-speed Ethernet network. A component
of this LAN is a high-speed wireless network, enabling computers and
other wireless devices to connect at speeds up to 54Mbps. Each student
and staff member has an individual account on this network, including
the capability to store files and access resources on school servers.
The South County LAN connects to the Fairfax County Public Schools
wide area network (WAN). As per federal and state regulations, Internet
access is filtered to deny access to websites deemed inappropriate
for juveniles by the Code of Virginia.
There are over 1900 high-end computers at South County.
This includes approximately 1000 laptop computers, more than 900
desktop computers,
and 9 servers.
Large interactive whiteboards, or “SmartBoards,” are
a vital part of the instructional technology at South County Secondary
School. With this technology, students and teachers can easily interact
with the computer, using their fingers as the mouse while the class
follows by watching the large screen. They can write with digital ink
over anything and save their notes to a single file that can be distributed
and shared with ease. Every teaching area in the building is equipped
with an interactive whiteboard, a data projector, a high-speed laser
printer, a DVD/VHS player, stereo speakers, and at least one computer.
