Leadership Development Program

The Leadership Development Program (pdf) is designed for high performing department personnel who show an interest and have demonstrated the skills necessary to pursue leadership opportunities within FCPS. The leadership development cohort is a one-year program, requiring a commitment to two days of class per month, as well as selected activities outside of class. Participants are selected competitively within each department. Applications are due January 10, 2008.

Professional Development Series (October 2007-June 2008) for All Support Employees

The purpose of this professional development series is to provide tools to enhance employees’ knowledge and skills as well as assist in reaching career goals.  The sessions included in this series will focus on self assessment, goal setting, communication, and management skills.  Registration for these sessions is available through My PLT

Supporting Success (next cohort - March, 2008) – Target Audience, US 19 and below

Supporting Successis an informational program implemented for support employees of FCPS to promote a better understanding of the workings of the school district. The program began in spring, 2003.  To date, 146 support employees have successfully completed this program. Weekly sessions are held that highlight a specific department within the school system.  Program participants meet at various locations throughout the county where they are presented with an overview of the department and its offices. Supporting the Mission – Target Audience, US 20 and above

The FCPS Overview: Supporting the Mission academy course is offered twice during the academic year—fall and spring.  Participants are nominated by Cluster and Department Assistant Superintendents.  The nominees include administrators and teacher leaders.  Participants will receive two Academy credits (60 points) for completion of this course.

Support Employee Career Fair (March 27, 2008) – All Support Employees

What:     Support Employee Career Fair

All FCPS support staff, regardless of unified scale grade, are invited to the Support Employee Career Fair sponsored by the Department of Professional Learning and Training. This event provides information about FCPS career growth and development. After a welcome from Terri Breeden, Assistant Superintendent, Professional Learning and Training, and guest speaker Dean Tistadt, Chief Operating Officer, Department of Facilities and Transportation, attendees will have opportunities to:  

  • Meet with representatives from FCPS departments and area universities.
  • Attend breakout sessions regarding career development topics.
  • Network with other support staff professionals.

Continuing Leadership Education Cohort (CLEC) (next cohort - April, 2008)

The Continuing Leadership Education Cohort (CLEC) is a program developed for support employees to provide a series of experiences that expose the participants to a more progressive level of leadership development.  After successful completion of the Support Services Institute, support staff is eligible to apply for the Continuing Leadership Education Cohort.

The robust curriculum is presented in a concentrated timeframe with each session building on the previous one to provide an optimal learning experience. The tools provided in this program were developed to enhance the current leadership skills of the participants and to promote further professional growth.  The sessions engage the participants in critical thinking, sharing of experiences, and networking.

Support Services Institute (SSI) (next cohort - September, 2008) Target Audience, US 13 - 19

The Support Services institute has been a catalyst for the careers of many employees as well a change agent for the policies and procedures of Fairfax County Public Schools.  To date, 222 employees have graduated from this program. 
The Support Services Institute (SSI) is a comprehensive program for support employees focusing on the development of leadership and management skills.  Participants selected for this program have demonstrated strong leadership capabilities in their present positions.  Program sessions provide the participant with a wide range of leadership tools that prepares them for work in a challenging and creative work environment.  It also provides an opportunity to use these tools in brain storming work sessions that address critical issues faced by FCPS and to prepare proposals and recommendations to address these issues.
Since the program’s inception in the fall of 2000, SSI has had tremendous impact on the Fairfax County Public Schools system through effecting changes in policies and procedures, i.e. the creation of the new employee orientation program, the development of the new support employee performance evaluation tool, as well as the creation of additional career development programs for support employees.

ACCESS Catalog Overview

The FCPS ACCESS catalog lists courses offered by three departments: Department of Professional Learning and Training, Department of Information Technology and Department of Human Resources. 

There is no tuition cost for contracted support services employee.  Registration remains open throughout the semester.

All support employees may request that a course be offered.  If there is a specific job-related course that would be helpful to a group of support employees, contact the department of Professional Learning and Training at 703-204-4085.
