Research
Bruce Joyce and Beverly Showers conducted ground-breaking research that directly speaks to the instructional coaching program in FCPS.
Joyce and Showers began their research in the 1980s to study how teachers learned new instructional strategies and then how they applied those strategies so student learning would increase. Over the course of the next fifteen years, Joyce and Showers discovered that professional development that used presentation and demonstration formats for delivering new learning to teachers generally failed to make it to the classroom. In other words, teachers did not transfer their new learning and apply it to increase student learning. When teachers received coaching from peers following presentations or demonstrations, the application of the new learning rose dramatically in the classroom.
