The Bottom Line: Reading, Math, and Closing the Gap Within a Culture of Collaboration
In 2005, Fairfax County Public Schools began an instructional coaching program to support the professional learning of teachers and staff members at identified K-8 schools. The program is in its second year with 24 instructional coaches assigned to 25 elementary and middle schools. An instructional coach:
- Identifies and refines instructional strategies in reading and math that will support the achievement of FCPS and school-specific goals.
- Observes and assesses student learning using evidence and data.
- Models and implements differentiated instruction to address achievement gaps among students.
- Works in close collaboration with teachers and school administration.

Becoming an Instructional Coach
The FCPS model for instructional coaching is based on the understanding that specific and focused professional learning is required for teachers to become coaches to their peers.
Instructional coaches need knowledge, skills, and abilities that will allow them to support, teach, and learn with their adult colleagues, both individually and in teams. The FCPS instructional coaches have a set of ten coaching standards that guide their learning, and all professional learning for FCPS coaches is aligned to these standards.
