Administrators play a key role in inducting and retaining beginning teachers in their schools and in the teaching profession. Studies consistently show that more teachers who are enrolled in the Great Beginnings Induction Program remain teaching in Fairfax than their peers who do not enroll in Great Beginnings.
How do I select an outstanding Lead Mentor?
Administrators appoint lead mentors each year. When selecting lead mentors, consider individuals who possess the following characteristics:
- Willingness and ability to assist teachers and to share strategies and ideas.
- Successful classroom teaching,
- Someone who is viewed as a leader by the staff and respected by the school community.
- Personal traits such as friendliness, empathy, flexibility and a positive, cooperative attitude.
- Substantial knowledge of content and curriculum requirements.
- Someone who supports Professional Learning Communities and a true culture of collaboration.
- Willingness to serve in this capacity for at least a two-year period.
