Support for Administrators

FCPS has a team approach to new teacher induction.

At school sites, administrators select lead mentors who ensure that all mentees are matched with ideal mentors.

School teams collectively support new teachers and learn with one another in a Professional Learning Community.

The Department of Professional Learning and Accountability (program sponsor) works collaboratively with Instructional Services, Special Services and The Department of Human Resources to ensure the program is cohesively coordinated.  This supportive context starts from the very first day of a new teacher’s career in FCPS and continues to provide ongoing professional development, support, and the tools to support outstanding teacher growth and student learning.

Administrators play a key role in inducting and retaining beginning teachers in their schools and in the teaching profession.  Studies consistently show that more teachers who are enrolled in the Great Beginnings Induction Program remain teaching in Fairfax than their peers who do not enroll in Great Beginnings.

What Administrators Can Do

  • Ensure that all new teachers enroll in the Great Beginnings: The Next Generation Programs for all of your new teachers.
  • Select excellent mentors, provide a common planning time for mentors and mentees, and monitor the Great Beginnings Mentor Program at the school site.
  • Provide professional learning communities, teaching assignments, and professional development necessary for new teachers to succeed.
