Background
The Fairfax County School Board received feasibility studies on renovating Clifton Elementary and overcrowding solutions at southwestern elementary schools prepared by the Department of Facilities and Transportation at its July 13 work session. FCPS staff recommended that a community engagement process should be held over the next several months prior to School Board consideration of the issues. The studies address water, transportation, site, and construction challenges at Clifton Elementary and current and future student capacity at neighboring schools in the southwest county area.
Members of the Board's Comprehensive Planning Development Committee developed recommendations for the community engagement process to address the Clifton school issue and the projected overcrowding of elementary schools in southwest Fairfax County and presented these at the September 14 School Board work session. At this meeting, the School Board directed staff members to initiate the Southwestern Regional Planning Study as presented.PTA and PTO presidents from the schools identified by FCPS staff appointed school and community representatives to serve on the new study committee to review the issues, determine solutions, and document advantages and disadvantages
The School Board has not made any decision regarding the issues raised in the feasibility studies. Per the study committee and the process designed for engagement and study of these issues, the study committee and staff can further recommend changes to the draft feasibility studies for eventual School Board review.
Andrew Flagel, Bonnie Brae Elementary, and Kelly Hutter, Greenbriar East Elementary, were elected and serve as committee co-chairs. Fairview Elementary committee representative, Amy Riddick, was appointed recording secretary.
