Capital Improvement Program for Fiscal Years 2009-2013
Fairfax County Public Schools (FCPS) Superintendent Jack D. Dale has released the school system’s FY 2009-13 capital improvement program (CIP), which includes new schools, renovations, and additions over five years totaling $771.8 million; of these, projects totaling $518.8 million are currently funded with approved school bonds. In addition, the CIP also provides projections over the ten-year period FY 2009-18. The first five years of the plan, FY 2009-13, outline detailed student accommodations for specific schools or groups of schools, and the second five years of the plan, FY 2014-18, identify long-term projected needs. The total CIP project cost over ten years (including the prior year’s and the subsequent year’s expenditures) is estimated to be $1.85 billion.
The FY 2009-13 CIP reflects updated enrollment projections based on the increase in membership experienced this year. Five year projections indicate an enrollment of approximately 170,695 students for the 2012-13 school year; ten year projections indicate an enrollment of approximately 173,282 students in the 2017-18 school year. These projections moderate the recent trend of declining or flat enrollments to show growth based on increased enrollments experienced this year and anticipated growth in transit and revitalization corridors in Fairfax County.
Additionally, the CIP includes new information on school capacity, cash proffers, renovation schedules, and development monitoring.
