About Our People
* Gillian Hodge, a second grade teacher at Woodley Hills, has been named the WETA Hometown Hero for October. Hodge founded Grandma Rita’s Children, Inc., an Alexandria organization that offers summer outreach programs and educational opportunities to underprivileged children between the ages of 5 and 14, when she was just 16. Using an inheritance from her Grandma Rita, Hodge made it a goal to educate neighborhood children who were uninspired, were not challenged, and did not understand the world around them.
The WETA Hometown Heroes project honors Washington-area individuals whose work and volunteer efforts benefit the Greater Washington area. Each individual is recognized with a televised profile, airing on WETA-TV. Hodge's profile can be seen at http://www.weta.org/tv/local/hometownheroes/Gillian+Kilberg+Hodge.
Through the program, she introduced the children to career and service opportunities in their communities and provided mentors and role models while giving the children a sense of self-worth and building positive character traits. (view press release)
* Lana Bickert, accounting and finance teacher at Oakton High School, presented Teach Your Accounting Course Online at the 2008 Virginia Society of Certified Public Accountants High School Educators' Symposium in Richmond on November 4. Bickert has been involved in curriculum development for the FCPS accounting program and developed the online accounting and advanced accounting courses.
* Chantilly High comparative religions teacher Kathy Wildman is currently representing her school and FCPS at an international convention sponsored by the Organization for Security and Cooperation in Europe (OSCE) and the Office for Democratic Institutions and Human Rights (ODIHR) in Sarajevo. Wildman was chosen to speak at the Expert Seminar on Toledo Guiding Principles on Teaching About Religions and Beliefs in Public Schools due to her extensive work on the comparative religions curriculum at the county and national levels.
