*
Sandy Jones, family and consumer sciences coordinator in the Office of Career and Technical Education at Lacey Center, received the 2007 Distinguished Service Award from the Virginia Association for Teachers of Family and Consumer Sciences (VATFACS) on August 1. The award is presented to individuals who have received special recognition as teachers, who have held key state and/or national offices or committee appointments, or have made other significant contributions to the field of family and consumer sciences education.



VTEA Winners
* Congratulations to the following technology education teachers who received awards from the Virginia Technology Education Association (VTEA) at its summer conference held August 1 in Hampton. From far left to right the Teacher of the Year winners are: Phillip Harris, Annandale, and Steve Snyder, Robinson. The Program of the Year winners (from third from left to right) were James Bullock and James Gralton, both from Herndon Middle School.




Debra Lindsay* Debra Lindsay, music teacher at Crestwood, presented a session at the 2007 Australian Music Educators Conference (ASME) in Perth in July. She also presented at the Northwest Music Educators National Conference (MENC) in Portland, Oregon, the Northeast MENC in Hartford, Connecticut, and the Core Knowledge National Convention in Washington, D.C., this past spring. 

Lindsay produced four new publications in late spring, and another book for music educators will be released in October. In addition, Lindsay wrote numerous lessons for Liberty for All, an interactive CD that explores the history and culture of America’s westward expansion through an interactive musical journey featuring graphics, narration, quizzes, and more. This summer, Lindsay wrote music curriculum for the Virginia Department of Education and helped design the new sixth grade fine arts assessment.



* Four FCPS employees were honored with the Fairfax Association of Elementary School Principals (FAESP) President's Service Award at the FAESP luncheon held on August 8. This award recognizes FCPS employees who have provided exceptional service in support of elementary programs. They were
:

  • Barbara Burke, communications specialist, Office of Community Relations, Gatehouse Administration Center I

  • Tim Hilkert, human resources support specialist, Department of Human Resources, Gatehouse Administration Center I

  • Carol Horn, director of gifted and talented services, Department of Instructional Services, Lacey Center

  • Teddi Predaris, director, English for speakers of other languages, Department of Instructional Services, Lacey Center.


* An essay written by Mountain View staff members Mary Ewell, custodian II (left in photo), and Deborah Nagy, mathematics teacher and testing coordinator (right in photo), was published this summer in Fairfax County Stories: 1607-2007. Their essay titled “Gentleman Jim Robinson: The Family’s Story” is a biography of Ewell’s great-great-grandfather, a prominent free African American who lived in 19th century Fairfax County. The historical anthology was published by the Virginia 2007 Committee to commemorate 400 years since the founding of Jamestown.
