* Heather Wilhelm Menon, second grade teacher at Westgate, is the recipient of the 2008 William C. Lowry Teacher of the Year Award for outstanding teaching in mathematics at the elementary school level, given by the Virginia Council of Teachers of Mathematics (VCTM). Menon received her award at the VCTM Conference award dinner at the Virginia Tech Skelton Center on March 14.

* Greg Kfoury, Latin teacher at Fairfax, received a grant from the National Endowment for the Humanities to participate in an institute titled Houses of Mortals and Gods: Latin Literature in Context. The five-week institute will take place in Baltimore and Italy. Kfoury was selected from a national applicant pool and has also received a $3,600 stipend to cover travel, study, and living expenses.

* Penny McConnell, director, Food and Nutrition Services, wrote the chapter “Building a Technology Framework for Child Nutrition Programs” in the recently published textbook Managing Child Nutrition Programs, Leadership for Excellence, second edition.
